India’s construction sector is among the largest employers of informal labour, engaging over 65 million workers across trades including road laying, concrete construction, earthwork, and road maintenance. Despite years of on-ground experience, most workers lack formal certification, updated technical knowledge, or awareness of modern worksite safety standards – limiting wage potential and employability. Varanasi, one of Uttar Pradesh’s fastest-growing cities, is witnessing rapid infrastructure expansion including smart city projects, road and bridge construction, and heritage corridor works, significantly increasing demand for skilled and certified construction workers. Short-duration, focused upskilling interventions – specifically a structured 7-day programme – can meaningfully enhance a worker’s technical competence, safety awareness, and professional confidence without prolonged disengagement from their livelihood.
